Yeee-harrrrr!!!

The Grob, The Bad and The Ugly

part two - off the beaten track

Some sidelines useful for getting your opponent out of their book knowledge.

French Winawer Fingerslip Variation

Parlez-vous Francais? Neither do I. That's why I took up this odd line. It isn't great, but Frenchies don't expect to have to think until about move 12, so it's fun to wake 'em up a bit early on!

1.e4 e6  2.d4 d5  3.Nc3 Bb4

4.Bd2

In my experience, the Frenchie now sinks into their chair and thinks for 10-15 minutes before playing a 'normal' move (eg. Nf6 or c5). These are both playable but white still has an edge.

The supposed best line (which is given as equal in BCO2) goes....

4......dxe4  5.Qg4 Qxd4

finger2.jpg (17598 bytes)

Now the 'best' line is 6.Nf3 Nh6  7.Qxe6+ Bxe6   8.Nxd4 Bd7  9.Nxe4, but if you fancy chancing it tactically you could try....

6.0-0-0 f5  7.Qe2 Qb6  8.f3

finger3.jpg (17715 bytes)

and if exf3 you retake with the g-pawn to get the white bishop into play on the long diagonal.

I've played this sideline many times and no-one has yet come back at me with the 'best' reply.

Alekhine's Defence Krejcik Variation

1.e4 Nf6  2.Bc4

kraj1.jpg (18397 bytes)

The simple idea here is that if 2.....Nxe4 then 3.Bxf7+ Kxf7  4.Qh5+ will win back the piece and prevent black from castling. The downside is that black can artificially castle without too much difficulty and then his kings rook has an instant half-open file and pressure on white's f-pawn.

If that prospect doesn't bother you too much (and it shouldn't at our level!) then give it a go.

The other possibility is that black declines the 'gambit'. One way is 2....e5, after which I like the look of 3.Nc3 Bb4  4.Nf3 Bxc3  5.dxc3 d6  6.Qe2 0-0  7.Bg5 Nbd7  8.0-0-0 Qe8  9.g4 Kh8 (black can't take the pawn)  10.h4

with a strong white attack in prospect.

Center Counter Scrambler

A sideline to try against the 2....Nf6 version of the CC.

1.e4 d5  2.exd5 Nf6  3.Nc3 Nxd5  4.Bc4

cc1.jpg (17729 bytes)

At face value this doesn't look very good at all, not only is your opponent doubling your pawns next move but he's also gonna stop you castling..........

4......Nxc3 Qf3!

cc2.jpg (17288 bytes)

Out of book - mission accomplished.

(A better line for black starts 4.....Nb6 but it's also unclear and it's doubtful your opponent will know much, if anything about it).
